Revitalisation of Castings
Lynch Gardens, Sunshine, Victoria
PROJECT INFO
We undertook the refurbishment of the existing cast iron benches installed by the council in a public park. The project began by disassembling the deteriorated battens, removing sections that were either broken or rotten beyond repair. A key challenge was stripping the old powder coating, which required burning it off without damaging the underlying cast iron structure. Additionally, we enhanced the original design by adding extra bracing, ensuring the seats were more durable and better able to withstand future wear. To provide a fresh aesthetic while respecting the heritage character, we introduced mitre joins, giving the seating a modern twist while still aligning with the original concept. The final reassembly ensured the benches were structurally sound, with an eye toward both longevity and style.
PRODUCT SPECS
For the battens, we selected spotted gum hardwood, a durable Australian timber known for its strength and rich coloring, ensuring the refurbished furniture could endure outdoor conditions while offering a high-quality finish. Once assembled, the cast iron frame was finished with a fresh coat of Dulux Sensational Champagne powder coating, chosen for its elegant, subtle metallic sheen. This finish not only enhances the aesthetic appeal but also provides excellent weather resistance, protecting the structure from future corrosion. The blend of natural timber and metallic powder coating creates a striking visual contrast, making the refurbished furniture a functional yet artistic addition to the park.
